SRNL/SRS Task Order Research

SCUREF oversees a Task Order program for the research universities in South Carolina through a subcontract agreement with the Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS), the Management and Operating Contractor for the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) and the Savannah River Site (SRS).  The Task Order program has a long history of linking highly talented faculty members and students in projects that benefit the mission goals of SRS, while supporting the research and educational goals of the universities in South Carolina. Recent projects have included: Examination of the Electrical Properties of Micro- and Nano-scale Properties in Weak Electrostatic Fields; Tritium Supply Chain Modeling and Analysis; and Development and Implementation of Introductory Courses in Nuclear Safeguards.  Annual funding for the task orders have, at times, reached close to $1,000,000 a year.

A demonstrated result of this program has been the enhancement of collaborative efforts between South Carolina universities and the US Department of Energy facilities located at the Savannah River Site. Many SRS researchers have become adjunct faculty members at the universities, and some university faculty have become members of SRS research teams. Several students have been employed at SRS as a result of their participation in a task order project.

SCUREF has facilitated these interactions through the establishment of research committees composed of site researchers and university staff, faculty and students. The fiscal and project administration of the Task Order program is managed by SCUREF. This work includes ensuring adequate budgeting, appropriate invoicing for cost reimbursements, meeting report deadlines, all programmatic and budget amendments, and the evaluation of each project.
