The TRAINS Fellowship supports graduate students from both Europe and the United States to participate in short courses and tours of nuclear security research facilities, providing hands-on learning experiences in nuclear security and nonproliferation. This two-week program offers a selection of specialized courses, allowing participants to focus on one of several key topics, such as:
- External and internal threats to nuclear security
- Basic radiation detection
- Nuclear security culture
- Physical protection systems
- Nuclear materials accountancy
- Advanced reactor safeguards
- Nuclear security and the nuclear fuel cycle
- Governance, laws, and treaties related to nuclear security
- Export/import regulations relevant to nuclear security
In Europe, courses will be conducted at JRC and ENEA facilities and the Universities of Liege and Siena. In the United States, TRAINS Fellows will engage in related coursework at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL).
